Auditory Brainstem Response Test

Auditory Brainstem Response Test

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) test is a painless test performed to estimate the hearing sensitivities and abnormalities between the hearing nerve and brainstem pathways that transfer sounds from the inner ear to the brain.

The patients who have the following symptoms in both or one ear are the right candidate for ABR test:

  • Difficulty in hearing and conversation
  • Ringing in the ear
  • Problem with balance
  • Screening newborn who are at high risk of hearing loss
  • Ear or brain infection
  • Delayed speech and language development

Why conduct ABR test?

The ABR test is conducted when a baby fails a newborn hearing test or the younger children who cannot perform other test. The ABR test can measure hearing loss and its most possible cause.

What to expect?

The SpHear clinic  audiologist will ask you to sit in the reclining position while placing an electrode on your earlobes and forehead to record response of nerve when a click stimulus is delivered. As the clicks are delivered through the earphones, the electrodes will measure the activity in the auditory nerve on the computer attached to the electrodes.

Then theses responses are evaluated by the computer to produce a waveform. The test can last from 45 minutes to 2 hours.

There’s a sedation protocol that is followed before the test,if the patient is child .Mostly oral sedation is given within safe limits of use.

The child is expected to be sedated throughout the test procedure & if the patient is an adult or teenager ,he or she is expected to be in a non mobile state throughout the test process.

After the test

Once the test is completed, the earphones and electrodes are removed. The test result will be shared with your SpHear audiologist for analyses. You audiologist will share the result with you and talk about the most effective treatments for the patient.

How to prepare?

Mild sedation might be given to the child to make them sleep. Your pathologist will discuss about the eating and drinking instructions 2 to 3 days prior to the test. They will also tell you what can be eating after the procedure.
